Best of the Rest: Kelly Rowland’s Beyond Imagination

Simply Deep cover art Beyond Imagination, from Simply Deep, remains the best song Kelly Rowland ever recorded as a solo artist. The song is on a constant impeded crescendo that conveys beautifully the sense that the emotion is so overwhelming that one tries to suppress it.

As it builds, Kelly’s phrasing becomes more measured, controlled, focused until it just explodes. The clarity with which she conveys the emotion of this song is striking.

The lyrics here serve an emotional and tonal purpose, more than a narrative one. It is probably the best example of a confessional tone poem working completely when set to music. The lyrics, the melody and the production work beautifully together to create a beautiful, masterful song about anxiety.
